Free Wordpress Themes

Any Good Free Wordpress Themes

As you may notice I have changed my blog theme to the box standard one! This is because all the free wordpress themes are either crap or don’t work properly.

I really hate the dirty teases that make really nice wordpress themes that don’t work with the plugin’s or don’t display properly, I would rather have no choice than a flawed choice. It’s a bunch of jumped up web developers who are trying to get links into their website by building basic, though pretty, WP templates. I would be happy to pay for a fully working wordpress theme that support widgets, most free wordpress themes do not even support popular widgets such as the wp-flickr plugin! The reason I haven’t already is because all the wordpress themes are magazine style, that’s not what I’m looking for.

There is one theme out there that claims to support widgets and looks really nice but you cannot download it from his site and the guys contact form doesn’t work so you cannot contact him and tell him. The theme is bastard wordpress theme, it’s a German site, very nice! If anyone knows him tell him to give me a shout!

Myspace and my hopefully temporary addiction relapse

July 3rd, 2008

Myspace has that certain sort of hold on me!

Well, recently I have started using myspace again, my account is for the club in Glasgow a few friends and I host in The Admiral bar once a month.

Basically I have been using myspace to promo the night and get links at the same time. When I first started out dabbling in club night promoting I used myspace as place to meet and find new bands. After a few months of serious addiction, I realised that myspace as an effective tool of communication was about to fall flat on it’s arse. Of course there was those avid users that believed that it would last forever, never become saturated and was an effective tool for selling (it never was and never will be), they argued and argued with me until one day, one year on, they realised that it was just a bunch of crap! I say HA! to them.

Anyway, back to what I was saying, I have seemed to have become addicted to it again. When I started using it again I had around 1600 friends, I thought to myself these people don’t come to my night and don’t talk to me, they aren’t my friends! So I decided to start a mass culling of my myspace friends, to get rid of the terrible bands, Dj’s, neds and porn. Now I am down to about 600 and still getting requests everyday! I still plan to kill off more so if you are on the Kookin myspace friends list BEWARE!

On the plus side I met a couple of really decent people on myspace in the past few weeks, normal music lovers! Maybe this addiction is not all bad! I will probably follow up on this wee article!

Speak to y’all soon

The 33 Strategies of War - Pretty Good!

June 29th, 2008

The 33 Strategies of War - my take on it

OK, so I have just finished the critically acclaimed book ‘The 33 Strategies of War‘ by Robert Greene. I won’t go into too much detail about it the book because if I did you wouldn’t need to read it!

I found The 33 Strategies of War to be good, an interesting read for megalomaniacs that are looking for a bit of confirmation that the way they are living is good and justified. The 33 Strategies of War is an interesting book on how people should discipline themselves in their daily life to get the most out of their career and their employees obviously not all the strategies should be taken literally as most ideas are derived from battlefield conflict. Robert Greene gets over this hurdle by finishing each chapter with a summery of interpretation explaining each ’strategy’ and how it applies to a none military situation.

Each war strategy chapter starts by explaining a story of a battle in history, e.g. a battles that Napoleon fought in or a battle from an ancient Chinese war. Robert Greene goes on to explain the characteristics that the general/ politician/ individual had which allowed him/her to over come the odds and claim victory.

All and all I found ‘The 33 Strategies of War‘ by Robert Greene to be a good read and even though the book doesn’t have any real spin on war it does definitely give you a few things to consider when dealing with difficult situation in work.

I would definitely recommend ‘The 33 Strategies of War’ by Robert Greene, you can buy it from amazon.co.uk for really cheap; it’s under £10. Have a look!!

Flying Lotus Los Angeles on Warp

June 27th, 2008

Flying Lotus Los Angeles, Warps newest addition

I recently got the Flying Lotus Los Angeles album after having it recommended to me by Maceo Wyro who was playing at Patefon on the Sat 21st of June. After many conversations with Maceo Wyro I realized that we shared alot in common when it came to our musical tastes. So I decided to take him up on the recommendation, and this is what I thought.

The album is amazing, quite simply! With it’s strange mix of electronic sounds and harmonics with hip hop beats the album lets you chill out and tune in at the same time.

Some of the earlier tracks in the album are atmospheric and as the album goes on it becomes a bit more beat lead, it’s a nice wee progression.

You will probably hear me talk alot about ‘Sunday Morning Albums’ well people, Flying Lotus Los Angeles is the first of the year!

You can pick up Flying Lotus Los Angeles CD and vinyl at amazon.co.uk for the same price but I must say if you do like your vinyl you should get this one, its sleeve is impressive!

The Westend Festival, Glasgow!

Glasgow’s Westend Festival - The Parade

Well, for all those with their ears, eyes and general senses removed the Westend festival started this weekend.

As every year so far, it opened with a big parade that files down Byres Rd and around various places in the Westend. This was my first year attending the Westend festival, I’m not really a ‘Westend’ type; what do I mean by this? Well general consensus is that when you live in the Westend you live in a magical bubble were everything is pleasant and nice and the the shops are clean etc. until you hit Maryhill at which point this bubble is burst…Anyway back to the Westend festival!

As I mentioned before it was my first time there and to be honest I rather enjoyed the whole experience. Even though Byres Road was packed out and you couldn’t move for anything the atmosphere was really colourful and friendly, plus it was really cool to walk up Byres Road sober and not get shouted at and nearly hit by cars!

So, the Parade, after meeting up with my friend Hollie we waited impatiently and child like for about 20 minutes before the Westend parade started. There was not a lot of room at the side of the road but luckily enough I knew a sound engineer who was working at one of the stages; he was helpful enough to let up on stage to take some pictures, lovely man and a hell of a sound engineer too!

Being on the stage didn’t make me take better pictures but, for a moment at least, I could see the whole parade! I have added a bunch of my photos to my flickr account where you should be able to see them!

Anyway, I had pretty good day and would definitely recommend the Glasgow Westend Festival Parade to everyone and anyone!
